The PEACE Programme is pleased to announce its 7th International Conference to be held on 22 and 23 November 2010 at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), Barcelona. The 8th Session of the General Assembly will also be held on 23 November in the afternoon, at the end of the International Conference.
To mark the celebration of 2010 as the International Year of the Raprochement among Cultures, a special session of the Conference will be devoted to the Role of universities in promoting dialogue among cultures and civilizations. Presentations of positive experiences and good practices of universities from various parts of the world will be complemented with a special focus on the role of Palestinian academics in promoting dialogue among cultures and civilizations.
At the World Summit on Sustainable Development in 2002, eleven leading educational and scientific organizations, under the leadership of the United Nations University-Institute of Advanced Studies (UNU-IAS), signed the Ubuntu Declaration on Education, Science and Technology for Sustainable Development. The signatories of the Declaration are called the Ubuntu Alliance members. The Ubuntu Alliance, at its meeting in 2006, established a Committee of Peers for the RCEs (Regional Centres of Expertise on Education for Sustainable Development) to discuss ways to promote education for sustainable development (ESD), to review applications and provide recommendations to the UNU on the acknowledgement of new RCEs.
An RCE is not a physical centre but a network of existing local/regional institutions mobilized to promote all types and levels of learning for a sustainable future. An RCE is a network of local stakeholders for ESD, and local higher education institutions must be part of the network. As of May 2010, there are 76 RCEs worldwide, in Asia, the Pacific, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and the Americasb el que trobaràs en aq. RCEs, both individually and collectively aspire to achieve the goals of the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD, 2005-2014).
Since 2006, the Ubuntu Committee of Peers for the RCEs has met annually to review applications and give strategic advice to the RCE community at UNESCO Paris (2006, 2007, 2008) and the UNU Headquarters in Tokyo (2009). This year, the Fifth Meeting of the Ubuntu Committee will be held in Barcelona in conjunction with the GUNI Conference. Attendance is by invitation only.
